Easter holidays in the mountains of Asturias and on the Atlantic coast

We will make the most of the Easter holidays to explore one of the most spectacular regions of northern Spain in five days. The trip takes place from 24 to 28 March, and thanks to Good Friday and the Easter holidays, you will need to take only 2 working days off.

We will stay at the comfortable AC Hotel Oviedo Forum, which will be our base for all four nights. Every day, we will travel by rented minibus in a different direction – to the Picos de Europa mountains, the Lakes of Covadonga, Somiedo Natural Park and the Atlantic coast.

Our hikes will take us along the famous Ruta del Cares, past mountain lakes and traditional shepherd settlements, while on the coast we will discover dramatic cliffs, secluded beaches and the picturesque fishing village of Cudillero.

We will fly to Asturias and back on direct flights from Riga, allowing us to enjoy five days of adventure without any connecting flights.

How difficult will it be?
DIFFICULTY LEVEL
● ● ● ○ ○
3 / 5

During this five-day trip, we will have four very different hiking days – the Picos de Europa mountains, the glacial lakes of Covadonga, Somiedo Natural Park and the Atlantic coast of Asturias.

We plan to hike approximately 12–16 km per day. The longest individual hike will be around 13 km, although on some days we will do several shorter hikes instead of one long route.

The terrain will vary from rocky trails and mountain switchbacks to lakeside paths and coastal cliffs. On some days, the total ascent will be around 500–600 metres.

This is not a technically difficult mountain hiking trip, but you should be prepared to spend several consecutive days being active outdoors and walking on uneven terrain.

Weather

Late March is springtime in Asturias, but the weather on the Atlantic coast and in the mountains can be very changeable.

On the coast and in Oviedo, the weather can be pleasantly spring-like, while wind, rain, fog and patches of snow are possible at higher elevations in the Picos de Europa and Somiedo. For this reason, the itinerary will remain flexible and individual hikes will be adjusted according to the actual weather conditions.

You will need waterproof clothing, hiking shoes with good grip and several layers of clothing.

Accommodation

We will spend all 4 nights at the AC Hotel Oviedo Forum in central Oviedo.

We will stay in twin rooms. Staying at the same hotel throughout the trip means that our main luggage can remain at the hotel each day, and we will only need to carry a small daypack on the hikes.

Breakfast at the hotel is included.

Food

Breakfast at the hotel. On hiking days, we will take some lunches with us as picnics, while on other days we will have lunch in local villages and towns.

In the evenings, we will have the opportunity to explore Oviedo’s restaurants and Asturian cuisine.

Transport

Throughout the trip, we will have a rented minibus at our disposal, which we will use to travel from Oviedo to the starting points of our hikes each day.

In some protected areas, we will also use local shuttle buses.

Group size

We will travel in a small group of 8 people. The small group size allows us to move more flexibly, adapt the itinerary to the weather more quickly and maintain a friendly, relaxed atmosphere during the hikes.

Tour leader

The Asturias hiking trip will be led by Reinis Nartišs – an experienced hiking leader and outdoor enthusiast who has already led Velomens group trips in the Faroe Islands, Norway and the Canary Islands. Reinis has led hikes on nature trails in Latvia and gained experience in the Caucasus Mountains, the Alps and Gran Canaria. He knows how to maintain a friendly atmosphere within the group while keeping an eye on participants’ well-being, pace and safety.

This will be particularly important in Asturias, where mountain weather can change quickly. Reinis will work with the group to choose the most suitable pace for each day and adjust the route to the conditions whenever necessary.
